WELCOME TO SENJA

Senja

As Senja is Norway's second largest island after Hinnøya (Svalbard not included) and is located in Troms county. The island has an area of ??1,589.35 km² and just under 8,000 inhabitants. The population center of gravity is along the Gisundet on the inside of the island.

Travel

The residents of Senja have via Gisundbrua a ferry-free road connection to the mainland over Gisundet to Finnsnes, which is the nearest city. The city serves as a trading center for the entire Mid-Troms region, Senja included. But the island is also connected with the other towns in the county. At Lysnes in northern Senja you have a fast boat connection with Tromsø, a trip that takes about 50 minutes. From the villages Flakstadvåg and Skrolsvik on the west and south side of the island there are also speedboats to Harstad. And in the summer there is a ferry between northern Senja and Kvaløya and between Gryllefjord and Andenes..

Sights

At Senja there are several museums, most of which are located in the center of Troms Museum. Among these we have the Sam Museum in Kaperdalen, Hofsøya Bygdemuseum and the Kveitmuseet / Gammelbutikken in Skrolsvik. The island is rich in sights, both in terms of nature and history. One can mention, for example, Senjens Nickelworks at Hamn, where the world's first power plant based on hydroelectric power was started in 1882. For the smallest, Senjatrollet and Hulderheimen on Finnsæter i Berg are a popular target.
